Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Wednesday that Manning was making progress with the inflammation around his heel, which has been diagnosed as plantar fasciitis.

Coughlin said Manning would be evaluated day to day and his status for Sunday's game at home against the Oakland Raiders is uncertain. Manning has said he intends to play.

Coughlin said he's willing to take the decision whether or not to start Manning until game time Sunday. He said Manning could play even if he did not practice all week.

Veteran David Carr would replace Manning if he could not play. He will take the first-team snaps Wednesday.
