Nathan Vasher signs deal with San Diego Chargers

Cornerback Nathan Vasher has signed a two-year deal to join the San Diego Chargers' secondary, the team announced Monday.

Vasher

Vasher, who has played his entire six-year career with the Chicago Bears, will sign for $4.5 million over two seasons, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

"In Nathan Vasher, we're adding a proven NFL player with experience in the league," said general manager A.J. Smith. "Having played in Chicago under Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera [2004-06] and secondary coach Steve Wilks [2006-08] is an added bonus."

Vasher played in 15 games last season for the Bears, with one interception. He has 19 career picks in 73 career games. He made the NFC Pro Bowl team in 2005, when he had eight interceptions.

Vasher, 28, played collegiately at Texas, where he was a teammate of Quentin Jammer, who also plays cornerback for the Chargers.

Dallas Cowboys sources deny team is trying to trade running back Marion Barber

DALLAS -- The speculation surrounding whether the Dallas Cowboys are shopping starting running back Marion Barber is just that.

Multiple team sources said Tuesday that the Cowboys haven't discussed trading Barber, who is coming off two injury-filled seasons where he failed to rush for more than 1,000 yards. The NFL Network reported Monday that NFL executives have said Barber is available via trade.

Barber is scheduled to get a $4 million roster bonus and a $3.8 million base salary in 2010. If the Cowboys trade Barber, another team would have to pick up that contract or try to rework the deal.

The only definitive information about Barber's status has come from Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, who said the organization has thought about starting Felix Jones.

"I see the advantages the way we've done it," Jerry Jones said last week about having started Barber with Felix Jones in a reserve role. "But it was a pretty close decision, really. I know it was a consideration."

Barber, who doesn't give interviews, has been working out at the Michael Johnson Performance Center in McKinney, Texas, to get in better shape.

Last season, Barber suffered from a plethora of injuries -- a bruised left thigh, fractured thumb and a bruised left knee -- but missed just one game, Week 3 versus Carolina.

Jerry Jones is not concerned about Barber's health.

"It would [concern me] if we didn't have the depth there," Jones said. "But by having the depth, we can feel good about [it]. Maybe [if] Marion hadn't [had] a couple of unfortunate seasons there, maybe we'll get a big year out of him. If you did that, you've hit a home run."

Backup running back Felix Jones finished his second season with 685 yards and three touchdowns on 116 carries. In two playoff games, he led the Cowboys' rushing attack with 217 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries.

Tashard Choice, the No. 3 back, is used on third down and in the Razorback formation, but he would like to get more carries in the offense. Choice has expressed frustration with his role, but he hasn't asked for a trade.

The Cowboys have been scouting running backs for the upcoming draft. If they select one, it would create a logjam at an already-crowded position.

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys executive vice president, said last month he expected the team to keep all three of its running backs.

"I know this: We've been doing what we ought to be doing and that's evaluating the running game and how we're the most productive ... what plays, what formations give us the most production," Jerry Jones said. "Based on preliminary input from our coaches, you could certainly see Felix in there earlier."

Source: St Louis Rams to work out Colt McCoy before NFL draft

As NFL executives flock to Austin, Texas, to watch quarterback Colt McCoy's pro day Wednesday, it turns out the St. Louis Rams want to take an extended and more personal look at the former Texas star.

A league source tells ESPN.com that the Rams will hold a private workout for McCoy in Austin before the NFL draft begins April 22. The exact date of the workout is unknown.

St Louis Rams to work out Colt McCoy before NFL draft

McCoy

This is an interesting development because the Rams are the favorites to draft Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the No. 1 overall pick.

But a source said St. Louis continues to turn over every rock, and hasn't completely ruled out an alternative plan, in which the team might select McCoy at the start of the second round (No. 33 overall), while selecting another player with its top pick -- presumably Oklahoma defensive lineman Gerald McCoy or Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh.

There are questions about McCoy's size, but he is garnering interest because of his great accuracy. He completed 70.6 percent of his passes for Texas last season, throwing for 3,521 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Other teams in search of quarterbacks, such as the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills, also are reportedly showing interest in McCoy.

Sources said Chicago Bears defensive end Alex Brown sought a contract extension before learning he would be traded or released

Get the latest Bears news from ESPN Chicago. Blog

CHICAGO -- Perhaps an early indication the Chicago Bears were considering cutting ties with defensive end Alex Brown occurred around the time of the NFL combine in February when, according to a source familiar with the situation, Brown's agent Joel Segal approached the Bears about a contract extension for his client.

This idea was quickly nixed by the Bears, according to the source.

Despite his failure to land a new deal, Brown, who has two years left on his contract, still felt confident he would retire in a Bears uniform, according to multiple league sources. But those sources said Brown told teammates last week that he believes he'll be traded or released.

Maybe the best thing for Brown, 30, was the Bears' plans becoming public, since it'll be more difficult for the organization to trade the defensive end now that all 31 NFL teams know he could be available for nothing if they wait until his release.

Brown, a fourth-round pick in 2002, has been one of the Bears' most consistent performers. He has 35 sacks since 2004.

But he apparently became expendable when the Bears signed Julius Peppers and decided to move Israel Idonije to defensive end. The Bears also are hoping for Mark Anderson to return to his rookie form, when he had 12 sacks in 2006.

Source: St. Louis Rams will wait for private Sam Bradford workout before making draft decision

While the St. Louis Rams are very likely to select Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the first pick in next month's NFL draft, a team source said they won't make a final decision until after the team orchestrates a private workout for him on April 19, just three days before the draft's first round.

Bradford went through his first public workout on Monday in front of the Rams and other NFL teams at Oklahoma's pro day in Norman.

The potential No. 1 NFL draft pick completed all but one of his five dozen passes during a workout Monday on his college campus in Oklahoma.

AP Photo/Sue OgrockiSam Bradford missed just one pass during his first public workout since undergoing surgery to reconstruct the AC joint in his right shoulder.

Bradford went 13-for-13 during a warm-up session and then missed only one of 50 passes in the workout that followed. He completed a handful of passes 30 yards or longer, including a post pattern that went more than 50 yards.

"I thought I did very well today," Bradford said. "I showed a wide variety of throws. I didn't just come out and show the basic things, I showed some in the gun, on the move and different throws. I think I showed everyone that I can still make all the throws and my shoulder is just what it was before I got hurt."

Rams general manager Billy Devaney and coach Steve Spagnuolo were among the contingent sent by the Rams. Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary and Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren also watched.

"Really positive. I thought the whole workout was positive," Devaney said. "I think he answered a lot of questions for a lot of people today."

A team source said the Rams weren't looking to be "wowed" by Bradford, knowing this was his first full-blown throwing session since he underwent right shoulder surgery to reconstruct the AC joint he damaged during his junior season. The team has analyzed Bradford's college game video and team doctors are comfortable with his medical data, the source added.

Bradford said he had breakfast with Spagnuolo and the Rams' offensive coaching staff before his workout. Spagnuolo and Devaney also visited with Bradford earlier in the month in Gulf Breeze, Fla., where he was rehabbing and working out. Bradford returned to Norman last week to continue his preparation for Monday's session.

The Washington Redskins, who select fourth in the draft, also have scheduled a private workout with Bradford on April 15.

Bradford said every player dreams of being picked first in the draft, but he hasn't given it much thought. And he said it would be up to the Rams whether he'd sign a deal before draft day, should they decide to draft him at No. 1.

"I don't control that. I have no clue how it's going to play out," Bradford said. "If that's how it works, then that's how it works. If not, I'll be excited to hear my name called on draft day."

Bradford admitted being nervous before the throwing session, in part because it was an unusual situation to have one receiver running a pattern at a time with no defense.

"At the end of the day, it's still just a workout," Bradford said. "I'm not going to go to the NFL and throw routes on air to guys. I'm going to have to play against a very good defense week in and week out."

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga calls rehab a 'life-changer'

CINCINNATI -- Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga was emotional in explaining his past troubles Monday.

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga calls rehab a life-changer

Maualuga

After serving about a month in rehab following an offseason arrest for DUI, Maualuga discussed it for the first time with the media during the start of Cincinnati's offseason program.

"All I can say is you're looking at a different guy, a different person," Maualuga said. "I just hope the city of Cincinnati would accept my apology and hopefully help me through all of this."

A remorseful Maualuga said it's a priority to prove to his teammates he can be trusted again. On the field, the 2009 second-round pick had a productive rookie season for the reigning AFC North champions, recording 63 tackles and one sack.

But the Jan. 29 incident where he crashed into two parked cars and a parking meter put a blemish on his fast start. He ended up with two years' probation, a revoked driver's license and could face some form of a suspension by the league this upcoming season.

Maualuga was expected to check into the Betty Ford Clinic in Rancho Mirage, Calif., but underwent treatment at a Charleston, S.C., facility instead while working to improve his left ankle that was fractured in December.

"I sought that help, and I got what I needed when I went in," Maualuga said. "It was definitely a life-changer for me."

Maualuga completed the program in time to make it to the first day of offseason workouts, where he said it's time to move forward. Maualuga said he's learned a lot about himself in the process and that it will eventually help him on and off the field entering his second season.

"This year is a different year and it's my year," Maualuga said. "I'm going to come out and give it everything I got."

Ex-Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly has dinner with Tim Tebow

Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly kick-started his public campaign to pull his former team back into the NFL fold Sunday night.

Ex-Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly has dinner with Tim Tebow

Kelly

It began with Tim Tebow.

Kelly, who has talked up Tebow over the past few months, had dinner with the former Florida Gators quarterback on Sunday night, Kelly's spokeswoman Tricia Cavalier said Monday. It's unclear whether the dinner occurred before or after the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner met with the team.

Kelly was traveling and unavailable for comment. Kelly's wife, Jill, first revealed the two had dinner in a post on her Twitter account Sunday night.

"He's a class act and a great guy," Kelly said of Tebow, according to his wife's post.

Bills coach Chan Gailey expressed interest in Tebow last week, saying he has "every tangible" you could ever want in a quarterback.

Kelly has been a vocal supporter of Tebow and has made it little secret he'd like to see the team draft him.

"I wish I could say more," Jill Kelly wrote. "If only I were there too! LOL! It was a great night! Now before U go 2 bed - pray for our Buffalo Bills!"

The Bills, who hold one draft pick in each of the first four rounds (overall Nos. 9, 41, 72 and 107), have started nine different quarterbacks since Kelly retired. Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick split time in 2009, with Fitzpatrick taking the reins in Week 6.

The quarterback who led the Bills to four AFC championships has said a key to a return to greatness for the franchise begins under center.

"Whether it's Tim Tebow, whether they'll have a shot at him when draft time comes ... you have to look at the top three quarterbacks in the draft, really study them," Kelly said to USA Today in November. "And you look for a guy with good character, good leadership ability and good arm strength."

The Bills went to four straight Super Bowls from 1990 through the 1993 season with Kelly at quarterback. But there's been little to shout about at Ralph Wilson Stadium lately: Coach Dick Jauron was fired in November and 2009 was the team's 10th consecutive season without making the playoffs.

Kelly said he sought to offer assistance in luring coaches and players to Buffalo and eventually wanted to become part of an ownership group that would keep the Bills in western New York.

"You have to start with the head coach and you have to start with finding a good signal caller," Kelly said, according to the USA Today report. "You look at Indianapolis. You look at Pittsburgh. You look at New England. You look at what Drew Brees is doing in New Orleans. San Diego. All the teams that are doing well, they all have quarterbacks.

"The teams that are struggling, they don't have a quarterback," Kelly added. "You need that guy behind center, not only the guy who can throw the ball and make big plays. But to be the leader and be able to pull people together."

Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger won't report to Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers Ben Roethlisberger wont report to Steelers

Roethlisberger

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not report to the Steelers' offseason conditioning program.

Team spokesman Dave Lockett says the two-time Super Bowl quarterback is not expected to join his teammates this week for voluntary offseason workouts that begin Monday.

After discussing whether Roethlisberger's presence would create too much of a distraction, the decision was made for him not to attend the team's offseason program, according to a source.

Such workouts are not open to reporters, but a large number were expected at the Steelers headquarters Monday because Roethlisberger has not commented on the Georgia incident since it occurred earlier this month.

It remains uncertain when Roethlisberger will report to the team.

Last week, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he expected Roethlisberger to arrive with the rest of the Pittsburgh veterans. The quarterback also skipped voluntary workouts with the team two weeks ago.

The conditioning work involves no on-field practicing, but instead emphasizes lifting weights and getting into football shape.

Roethlisberger is accused of assaulting a 20-year-old college student in a Georgia nightclub on March 5, but charges have not been filed. Roethlisberger's lawyer says the quarterback committed no crime. An investigation is ongoing.

Roethlisberger also is being sued by a woman who says he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel. He denies the allegation and has asked for counterdamages.

The Steelers aren't scheduled to begin on-field practicing until April 19, when they begin OTAs -- NFL shorthand for organized team activities. Such practices resemble those held during the season and starting quarterbacks usually take part in most sessions unless they are injured.

Despite the strong start to Roethlisberger's career -- he has taken the Steelers to two NFL titles and three AFC Championship Games in six seasons -- and the estimated $66 million left on his $102 million contract, the Steelers are clearly upset with the quarterback's off-field problems.

Team president Art Rooney II has met with Roethlisberger, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also plans to meet with the quarterback at an unspecified time. Tomlin also has been in constant contact with Roethlisberger.

"We take this issue very seriously," Goodell said on March 22. "I am concerned that Ben continues to put himself in this position.

Rooney said the Steelers are "in a situation [where] we're going to let this investigation play out and then go from there."

The NFL has not said if Roethlisberger might be suspended if he is charged in the Georgia case.

Despite Roethlisberger's problems, Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said the team does not anticipate drafting a quarterback in the early rounds next month.

Santonio Holmes of Pittsburgh Steelers faces lawsuit alleging he threw drink at nightclub, says he didn't do anything

Another member of the Pittsburgh Steelers is facing potential trouble stemming from an alleged incident at a nightclub.

But Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who is facing a civil lawsuit in Florida in which a woman accuses him of throwing a drink at her, says he didn't do anything and expects the matter to be dealt with quickly.

Santonio Holmes of Pittsburgh Steelers faces lawsuit alleging he threw drink at nightclub, says he didnt do anything

Holmes

Holmes, a former Super Bowl MVP, told ESPN's Rachel Nichols he has confidence that this matter "will be taken care of quickly, within the next 24 hours." When asked about the specifics of the case, he said "I really don't have much to say about it because I didn't do anything. My lawyer is handling it from here."

Holmes has not been charged in connection with the alleged incident.

Courthouse News Service, a legal wire service, first reported that the plaintiff in the case, Anshonoe Mills, alleged that on March 7, Holmes ordered her to get off a couch at the Rain Night Club in Orlando and threw his glass at her, cutting her near the eye.

The lawsuit also claims Holmes and a police officer intimidated Mills so she wouldn't press charges.

"[Holmes] proceeded to inform the plaintiff that he was an NFL football player and that he could not face criminal charges. Subsequently, [Holmes] offered to give the plaintiff money because he was an NFL star and could not get into trouble," the complaint alleges, according to the report.

Orlando Police Sgt. Barbara Jones hadn't seen the lawsuit and couldn't comment.

Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett said team officials were gathering information and had no immediate comment.

Mills' attorney, Jacques Cooper, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that Holmes had been served with the lawsuit, but did not offer additional details.

"We're not really making comments in-depth about the matter at this time," Cooper said, according to the report. "We're still looking into the matter and are waiting to hear from Mr. Holmes' people."

Holmes' teammate, Ben Roethlisberger, is currently being investigated by Georgia authorities following allegations of sexual assault in a bar on March 5. Roethlisberger has denied the accusation through his attorney and has not been charged.

Holmes was cited for marijuana possession, a misdemeanor, in Pennsylvania in 2008. The Steelers made Holmes inactive for the game following the incident and he subsequently apologized.

He was arrested on a domestic violence charge in 2006 in Ohio, but that charge was later dropped.

The California Highway Patrol said Porter was confronted by officers early Saturday in a fast-food parking lot.

Porter, 33, refused to provide his driver's license and began to roll up his window when asked to leave the car. Police say that when an officer reached to unlock the door Porter slapped the officer's hand.

Porter eventually got out and complied with orders, placing his hands behind his back. He and a passenger were arrested.

The 11-year veteran recently signed signed a three-year, $17.5 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals. He also has played for Pittsburgh and Miami.

The Cardinals released a statement Saturday: "The team is aware of the incident. We are in the process of gathering all of the facts concerning it and won't comment further until that's completed."

However, Favre remains uncertain about his NFL future and the Vikings have not pressured him to make a decision even as rumors of an eventual McNabb trade from the Philadelphia Eagles increase, according to the source.

McNabb spoke with Eagles coach Andy Reid and told him of his preference to remain in Philadelphia, a team source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday. The Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders have also shown interest in the 33-year-old quarterback.

McNabb is due a $6.2 million roster bonus on May 5, which is one reason trade rumors have heated up. Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick are also on the Eagles' roster. Schefter reported Friday sources around the league expect Kolb to be the Eagles starter when the 2010 season begins.

Vikings coach Brad Childress, who ardently pursued Favre and convinced him to come out of retirement last summer, was McNabb's quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in Philadelphia before coming to Minnesota. As was the case with Favre in leading the Vikings to the NFC Championship game, McNabb is extremely familiar with the Vikings' offensive system and terminology because of its similarity to the Eagles.

Brown, 30, has 35 sacks since 2004 and has been one of the Bears' most consistent performers.

But Chicago signed free-agent defensive end Julius Peppers, moved Israel Idonije from tackle to end and is still high on Mark Anderson, so Brown has become expendable.

It's also possible the Bears will move one of their young interior linemen, either Henry Melton or Jarron Gilbert, to the outside.

Brown was a fourth-round pick in 2002 and was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2006 and 2007.

Club manager: Friend protected Ben Roethlisberger

The manager of the club where Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is accused of having sexually assaulted a 20-year-old Georgia woman said Thursday one of the woman's friends told him a member of Roethlisberger's entourage had denied her entrance to the area leading to the bathroom where she believed the accuser and Roethlisberger were that night.

The accuser told police later that night Roethlisberger had assaulted her in the club's bathroom.

Hill: Goodell's slippery slope

Friend protected Ben Roethlisberger

The longer Roger Goodell waits to wade into the Ben Roethlisberger situation, the more he opens himself up to questions about race and the NFL's code of conduct. Story

Rocky Duncan, the manager of Capital City bar in Milledgeville, Ga., said Roethlisberger and his entourage of "about nine" people, not including the accuser or her friends, had arrived at the bar at approximately 1:10 a.m. Duncan said a member of Roethlisberger's group had asked for VIP seating in a private section of the club and a bouncer from the club to be stationed outside the area. Duncan said Roethlisberger's friend said, "We want the girls [to be allowed back into that section]."

Duncan said he escorted Roethlisberger and his group to the back room, sealed off by a curtain, that serves as the VIP area. Duncan said the bouncer, stationed outside the curtain, allowed women into the VIP area throughout the night.

Later in the evening, according to Duncan, most of Roethlisberger's group had wandered from the VIP area to a larger room that opens up off it -- a room also closed to the general public. Duncan said there were about 25 people in that area, called "the stage room."

Duncan said he saw Roethlisberger standing and talking with what appeared to be a woman sitting on a stool a few feet from the bathroom door, which was separated from the stage room by a 4-foot divider. Roethlisberger's frame blocked Duncan from seeing the woman. But Duncan added he had never seen the accuser and did not know what she looked like. Duncan said a member of Roethlisberger's entourage, whom he called "the ringleader," was sitting on a stool about a foot away from the door that led to the area where Roethlisberger and the woman had been talking.

Approximately 30 seconds after he saw Roethlisberger talking to the woman, Duncan said one of the accuser's friends approached Duncan and said, "I think my friend is in the bathroom with Ben, but the door [leading to the bathroom area] is locked, and I'm trying to get back there, and this guy [one of Roethlisberger's friends] wouldn't let me through." Duncan said she also told him, "I think my friend may be drunk."

Duncan said the accuser's friend "did not seem frantic, it was someone just looking for her friend." He said he told the woman she could either try to hop over the divider that separated the stage room from the bathroom area or "go around to the back and go through the backside entrance, because that door doesn't have a handle to it and you can go in that way." Duncan said he didn't know if the woman tried to get back into the bathroom area.

When asked if he thought there was anything alarming about a member of Roethlisberger's group standing outside a locked door, prohibiting someone from going into that area, Duncan said, "No, not really. Those guys had been protective of Ben all night. You wouldn't want someone taking a snapshot of Ben using the toilet."

There are seven cameras inside Capital City, according to Duncan. There are no cameras in the VIP area or in the "stage room" because those areas were added during a renovation. From camera footage that records the entrance and the main dance floor area, Duncan said he believes he saw the accuser and her friends -- which included the woman who had approached him earlier -- leave the bar around 1:45 a.m.

"They just walked out together," he said, "like you see any other time."

Duncan said he learned someone had made an accusation against Roethlisberger when "I got a call from Sergeant [Jerry] Blash, and he said a young woman approached him and said Ben assaulted her. He asked if they [Roethlisberger's group] were still at the club, and I said, 'Yes.' "

Duncan said police came to the club and spoke "briefly" with Roethlisberger and his group, in what Duncan described as an informal way. Duncan said he talked with police March 5, the day the allegations were made.

When he was asked if Roethlisberger had seemed inebriated that night, Duncan said, "You see a lot at a bar. Was he the drunkest person I ever met? No. Did he have a buzz? Probably."

On March 8, three days after the alleged incident, Duncan said police reviewed video footage of the night at his office in the club. The police were called away suddenly because of a murder in the area. Shortly afterward, Duncan said, his "tech guy" tried to make a copy of the camera outputs to give to the police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which was assisting on the case, but encountered problems. Duncan said they had trouble accessing the video again, and he was later informed by the GBI that there was nothing on the recordings.

The GBI said it has spoken with every member of Roethlisberger's group, except Roethlisberger. The GBI's initial request for a sample of Roethlisberger's DNA was rescinded more than a week ago, but its request to speak with Roethlisberger is still outstanding. Despite recently published reports to the contrary, the accuser "is still actively cooperating with the GBI's investigation," a source with knowledge of the investigation said Thursday.

ESPN phoned two women who were listed in the police incident report as being with the accuser that night, to ask for comment or corroboration. One said, "I can't comment on any of this, I'm sorry"; the other woman hung up.

Roethlisberger's attorney, Ed Garland, was not immediately available for comment.

Adam 'Pacman' Jones' agent: Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals interested

DETROIT -- Adam Jones is trying hard for a 2010 comeback.

Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals interested

Jones

At least three teams, -- the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals -- have expressed "great interest" in the troubled cornerback, though no signing was imminent, agent Ray Savage said Friday.

Savage said he hoped to set up in-person visits with those teams in the near future.

"Nothing's imminent, and I'm hopeful to schedule visits here in the next week or two," said Savage, whose comments came two days after Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said the Lions were "definitely interested" in signing Jones.

San Francisco's director of player personnel Trent Baalke told reporters Friday that the team was not interested in signing Jones, according to the Press Democrat's Web site.

"At this time there is absolutely no interest in Pacman," Baalke said, according to the Web site. "And I don't see that changing."

Schwartz said Wednesday at the NFL meetings that the Lions were gathering more information about Jones' level of commitment and how he could fit in Detroit's system.

The Lions were among a few teams that worked out Jones last week in New Orleans. Savage said Jones worked out earlier in the year for the Bengals "and we're hopeful that we'll be back in Cincinnati here in the next week. And we're trying to coordinate with San Francisco to get out there and meet with them."

In the meantime, trainer Duke Rousse is putting Jones through two-a-days in New Orleans. Rousse said Jones has put on 13 pounds -- he's now at 181 -- and still clocks in the sub-4.5-second range in the 40-yard dash.

"He looks awesome," Rousse said. "Physically he's ready" to play in the NFL next season, but "the big question is not his speed or what he can do on the field."

Jones was once considered a promising NFL star, but his repeated run-ins with the law have derailed his career.

The 26-year-old ex-West Virginia standout was an elite cornerback and kick returner in his first two seasons with the Tennessee Titans, where Schwartz was the defensive coordinator.

But Jones was suspended for the 2007 season by league commissioner Roger Goodell for a number of off-field incidents.

The Dallas Cowboys traded for him in 2008. Before that time, he had been arrested six times and involved in 12 episodes requiring police intervention since being drafted in the first round. He got into a scuffle with a bodyguard who was part of a team-employed security detail in October 2008 and again was suspended.

The Cowboys released Jones after the 2008 season in which he averaged only 4.5 yards per punt return and was spotty at cornerback.

He didn't play last year.

During their training sessions, Rousse said, Jones has been a model citizen, even spending time with a few dozen high schoolers who visit the training complex some afternoons.

"I have a lot of kids that came from the same background that he's come from," Rousse said. "And he basically preaches: 'Learn from your mistakes.' ... Just from a mentorship [standpoint], he's been awesome for the guys down here -- all my high school athletes."

Rousse said he believes Jones won't get in trouble again if an NFL team gives him a chance.

"I think he's learned, and he's matured," he said.

Chicago Bears safety Danieal Manning will not report to an offseason workout on Monday.

CHICAGO -- Chicago Bears safety Danieal Manning will skip the start of offseason voluntary workouts Monday because he hasn't signed his tender and therefore does not have a contract.

Chicago Bears safety Danieal Manning will not report to an offseason workout on Monday.

"I just want to make sure the fans understand that this is strictly a business thing right now," Manning told ESPNChicago.com. "I have no bad blood towards the Bears organization, and I know they have no bad blood towards me. But right now, we just have to get over this little disagreement we're having with the business aspect of football.

"But remember, this isn't a holdout. As we speak, I don't have a contract with the Bears since I haven't signed my tender."

Manning, a restricted free agent, was given a $1.176 million tender by the Bears. The former second-round pick has started at free safety, cornerback, nickel back, strong safety and returned kickoffs at a very successful clip.

Any team that signs Manning to an offer sheet would have to forfeit a third-round pick if the Bears declined to match the offer. The Bears have openly discussed the idea of Manning starting at strong safety in 2010, after the defensive back lost his starting spot at free safety toward the end of last season.

"Lovie Smith has called me, we've spoken about this, and he's let me know that he wants me to be a Bear," Manning said. "I've loved my time in Chicago, and I want to finish my career in a Bears uniform, and it's my sincere hope that happens.

"But I just didn't want to show up Monday with any bad vibes surrounding us. I feel confident in the end this will all work out."

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says team considering starting Felix Jones at running back instead of Marion Barber

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team has thought about sitting starting running back Marion Barber in favor of backup Felix Jones.

"Yes. That has been a consideration, and it certainly is a consideration," Jones said Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings. "I see the advantages the way we've done it [with Barber starting] and opening up real physical and intermediately bringing what Felix brings to the table. But it was a pretty close decision, really."

Jones said he would like to get Felix Jones, a 2008 first-round draft pick, more carries, especially earlier in games.

Last season, Barber led the team with 932 rushing yards on 214 carries and seven touchdowns. Jones had 116 carries for 685 yards and three touchdowns.

Both missed time because injuries the last two seasons.

Jones missed the last ten games of his rookie year with toe and hamstring problems. He missed two games with a knee injury in 2009.

When he returned in Week 7, Jones didn't have more than 10 carries in a game until a Dec. 19 upset victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 15. Jones carried a career-high 14 times for 58 yards in that game. In the regular-season finale, a win over the Philadelphia Eagles, Jones carried 15 times for 91 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown run.

In his two seasons as the full-time starter, Barber has battled injuries and failed to rush for over 1,000 yards.

In 2008, Barber missed one game with a dislocated toe, but it limited his ability to produce. He carried a total of 13 times the last three weeks of that season. He finished with 885 rushing yards seven touchdowns on 238 carries.

Barber started off with a burst in 2009, rushing 32 times for 203 yards and two touchdowns the first two weeks of the season.

But he suffered a left thigh injury in a Week 2 loss to the Giants. He sat out the next game but didn't miss any others. However, he played the last few weeks of the season with a fractured thumb and suffered a bruised left knee in the regular-season finale.

Jerry Jones isn't worried about Barber's physical style, which might be wearing him down, and Felix Jones' durability because he also has Tashard Choice as the No. 3 back.

"It would concern me if we didn't have the depth there," the owner said. "But by having the depth we can feel good. Maybe Marion had a couple of unfortunate seasons injury-wise, that maybe [if if he had been healthy] we get a big year out of him. If you do that you can hit a home run."

Warren Sapp will not face charge in domestic incident

Prosecutors for the Miami-Dade state attorney's office informed Judge Carroll Kelly that they have dropped a misdemeanor domestic battery charge against former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp.

Warren Sapp will not face charge in domestic incident

Sapp

Sapp was arrested Feb. 6, the day before Super Bowl XLIV, for allegedly choking a woman in his Florida hotel room. At the time, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders player was working for the NFL Network as an analyst on its Super Bowl coverage, but was pulled off the air when his arrest came to light.

Sapp, who was not present in court Wednesday when the charge was dropped, said via text message: "The State Attorney's office declined to file charges. BS is over!"

"We appreciate that the State Attorney's office conducted a thorough investigation into these allegations and determined that no charges should be filed," Sapp's attorney, Christopher Lyons, said in a statement.

"From the beginning, Mr. Sapp was always confident that the system would work and he would be cleared of any wrongdoing. Warren looks forward to putting this matter behind him."

A female acquaintance of Sapp's alleged that she had an altercation with him at about 6 a.m. ET on Feb. 6 at the Shore Club Hotel in Miami Beach, where Sapp was staying while working for the NFL Network. The accuser told police detectives that she and her friends were partying with Sapp at the hotel when she grew tired and asked Sapp for his room key.

The woman said Sapp came to the room a few hours later, woke her up and they began to argue. According to the arrest affidavit, the woman claimed Sapp choked her, pushed her down on a couch, grabbed her by her shirt and neck and threw her down again. The affidavit also stated the accuser had a swollen knee and bruises on her neck.

According to a prosecution memo, further investigation uncovered problems with the victim's account. For example, she told police that a man helped her walk down a hotel hallway, but surveillance video shows her walking with the man unassisted. She also told investigators that she had trouble walking after the alleged attack, but surveillance footage shows that she walked without a limp.

"Victim gave sworn testimony that she was in excruciating pain from the moment she fell on her knee and was teary-eyed while in the lobby moments after the incident," the memo states. "However, there is a security witness who observed the victim giggling with an anonymous man, as well as walking in high heels without any trouble."

Sapp had told investigators that he let the woman stay in his room but asked her to leave a few hours later. Sapp said she fell on her leg when he tried to help her get off a couch.

A telephone message left with a Miami Beach Police Department spokesman was not immediately returned.

Sapp later was removed from his role as an analyst for Showtime's "Inside the NFL." He has not appeared on either network since the allegations were made.

The 13-year NFL veteran, who retired in 2008, was a runner-up two years ago on the ABC television show "Dancing with the Stars."

NFL owners ponder new-look OT for regular season, approve safety rules

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The NFL has passed rules to further protect defenseless players, including ball carriers who lose their helmet during a play.

Seven of the eight rules proposals were approved Wednesday by the 32 owners.

Several owners said they also expect the modified overtime rule for the playoffs that passed on Tuesday to be revisited in May to include the regular season.

NFL owners ponder new-look OT for regular season, approve safety rules

The NFL owners had the right idea with the new overtime rule, but they sure did execute it poorly. Story

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said there is "a strong consensus for expanding [the new overtime rules] into regular season."

Among the rules proposals approved, no longer can a defenseless player be hit in the head or neck area by an opponent who launches himself and uses his helmet, shoulder or forearm to make contact.

NFL rules also now will echo those in college for when a player running with the ball loses his helmet. The whistle will blow immediately and the ball will be placed at the "progress spot" where the helmet came off.

Scot McCloughan out as San Francisco 49ers GM in 'mutual parting'

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers have a new man in charge of personnel decisions merely a month before draft day.

Scot McCloughan is out as the Niners' general manager in a "mutual parting," and director of player personnel Trent Baalke will lead the team into next month's draft.

Team president Jed York, speaking Monday in a conference call from the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, said it's in the best interest of both parties and called the move a "private personnel matter." He didn't elaborate on what went wrong for McCloughan, except to say it had more to do with the GM's personal issues than anything on the football side of things.

"Trent is leading us into the draft," York said. "Trent is the point person in the draft. He is making draft decisions. ... Trent knows the draft better than anybody else and I have full confidence in him."

Sando: 49ers Move On

Scot McCloughan out as San Francisco 49ers GM in mutual parting

49ers president Jed York announced the departure of former GM Scot McCloughan, but also showed San Francisco is wasting no time moving forward, writes Mike Sando. Blog

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported last Thursday that McCloughan was granted an extended leave of absence because of personal issues.

York, also the team's chief executive officer, said the team "had been prepared for this" but that he told McCloughan he would wait to announce it for five days.

"I gave Scot my word I wouldn't comment on this for five days," York said. "My integrity is more important to me than trying to get out a story. I gave Scot five days to think about where we wanted to go, and we decided to have a mutual parting."

When asked why McCloughan wanted to leave the organization, York said, "You'd have to ask Scot."

"It's a mutual parting in the interest of both the 49ers and Scot," York said. "We've been prepared. I wanted to make sure Trent was as up to speed as possible. He's taken on more responsibility in the past and again I'm confident that he can lead us through this draft and move us forward."

A call to Peter Schaffer, McCloughan's representative, wasn't immediately returned Monday.

York wouldn't say Monday whether there is a financial settlement involved -- and he believes McCloughan could work in the NFL again one day.

"I wish nothing but the best for Scot," York said. "I think Scot is a very good personnel guy. I care about Scot from a personal standpoint and I hope Scot gets a job somewhere. I wish nothing but the best for he and his family."

The team's draft board is nearly done and Baalke has been "intimately" involved in setting that board, York said. He also plans to be in the draft room April 22.

York didn't provide a timeline or definitive answer about whether he would even hire a new GM.

"I haven't decided if we're going to have a general manager," he said. "I'm worried about the draft right now. That's the only thing that the 49ers are focused on. We'll address that after the draft."

In January, York assumed the new role of chief executive officer in a reorganization of the team's front office and business department. In addition, Andy Dolich left the team as chief operating officer but was to remain a senior adviser to York during the transition.

The 49ers hired McCloughan in February 2005 to supervise their personnel department for Mike Nolan, a career assistant coach who was given total control of the club's football operations by owner John York, Jed's father and the brother-in-law of former owner Eddie DeBartolo.

McCloughan is a former minor league baseball player who became a respected young personnel executive during stints with Green Bay and Seattle. He has a mostly solid record during his years with the 49ers, compiling a young talent base that has steadily improved for most of his tenure -- yet the 49ers still haven't reached the playoffs in five seasons since his arrival. Their 8-8 record last season was their best since 2002.

McCloughan was hired as general manager in January 2008 when the 49ers nominally gave him authority over Nolan instead of firing the coach after the 49ers' third straight losing season. Nolan lasted just seven more games, with Jed York abruptly replacing him with Mike Singletary during the 2008 season.

Singletary had the interim tag removed from his title before last season, when the Niners ended a franchise-worst stretch of six straight losing seasons. York gave no indication Singletary would take on a greater role.

"Mike is concentrating on coaching," York said.

The 49ers were similarly mysterious about Nolan's departure, waiting several hours to acknowledge it -- well after Nolan already had told reporters he was out.

The 49ers would have several in-house candidates to assume McCloughan's responsibilities, though York is still undecided on how he will move forward. Baalke, director of pro personnel Tom Gamble, and Paraag Marathe, the 49ers' executive vice president of football and business operations, are all people the Yorks have depended on for big decisions.

Jed York has eagerly taken control of the franchise from his much-criticized father over the past two years. The 49ers selected the then-27-year-old York their team president in late December 2008.

York said McCloughan's younger brother, David, is still with the organization in the college scouting department.

"David is a professional," York said. "He has been great through this process and he will continue to be into the draft."

The contract is worth up to $2.1 million with incentives, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

One of coach Mike Singletary's priorities has been to bring some continuity to a unit that was plagued by injury last season -- and Sims filled in admirably as the starter at left tackle for seven games last season when Joe Staley was sidelined with a knee injury.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Sims is an 11-year NFL veteran who spent the past two seasons with San Francisco. He appeared in 30 games and made 15 starts, including eight at right tackle in 2008 in place of the injured Jonas Jennings.

Sims, 35, spent his first nine seasons with the Oakland Raiders after a standout college career at Utah.

Kyle Orton the Denver Broncos starter, but Brady Quinn competition welcome, says coach Josh McDaniels

Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels says there's "no question" Kyle Orton is the team's starting quarterback, according to The Denver Post. But he's leaving room for newly acquired Brady Quinn to compete for the job.

Earlier this month, the Broncos acquired the former first-round draft pick from the Cleveland Browns for fullback Peyton Hillis, a 2011 sixth-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2012. That raised questions in Denver about who would be the starter in 2010.

But McDaniels, speaking at the NFL owners' meetings in Orlando, said Orton has earned the right to begin camp as the Broncos' starter.

"He's a guy who made the most of an opportunity he was given last year," McDaniels said, according to the report. "Kyle started all but one game for us last year, and he's got the respect of his teammates and coaches and we look forward to him improving. Now Brady's here competing, and as always, players determine their roles by what they do on the field."

Shortly after the trade, Quinn -- who competed with Derek Anderson for the starting job in Cleveland -- made it clear he wanted to compete for the starting job in Denver. Quinn said the coaches would make the decision on who plays, but the players have to prepare to be the starter.

"I'll put it this way, I think every quarterback on our roster wants to play," Quinn said at the time. "Believe me, whether it's Tom [Brandstater], Kyle, or myself, we're all quarterbacks. We're going to be team players first, but we all want to be out there playing."

When the trade happened, Orton welcomed Quinn and said he was happy to work with him. But Orton also said he expected to be the starter, adding he had talked to McDaniels about Quinn before the trade was made

"I will keep [the conversation with McDaniels] private but I do have total confidence that I'm the guy there,'' Orton said at the time, according to The Denver Post. "Just like every year I'm going in to try and earn my starting job. I don't think I have anything to fret.''

On Monday, McDaniels said he welcomed the competition.

"There are guys that are definitely starters, and until someone comes in to knock them off their spot, it's going to be that way," McDaniels said, according to the Post. "Brady's a player who fits a lot of the qualities and characteristics we look for in our quarterbacks. We feel like we have three who are in that same boat. It made sense for us to try to improve the competition at that position just like it does when we try to improve our competition at any position."

Jerry Richardson of Carolina Panthers takes helm at owners meetings

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A little more than a year after receiving a heart transplant, Carolina's Jerry Richardson showed he still is one of the most powerful owners in the NFL.

At the opening session of the NFL owners meeting Monday morning, Richardson stood up and gave what several people in the room described as a passionate speech to the other owners as they continue their ongoing battle with the NFL Players Association over a collective bargaining agreement.

Some in the room said Richardson, who missed last year's owners meeting while recovering, took the microphone and stood and talked strongly for about 10 minutes.

Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed Richardson addressed the other owners.

"[Richardson] has been terrific," Goodell said. "Jerry is back. He's very engaged and he's very focused."

Richardson was one of the leaders in pushing through the previous collective bargaining agreement, which teams later opted out of.

Richardson urged other owners to stay united, the sources said. Richardson is the only majority owner who played in the league.

He played for the Johnny Unitas-led Baltimore Colts in the late 1950s and brought an expansion franchise to Carolina in 1995.

Since the Panthers began play, Richardson has been one of the league's most influential owners, frequently bridging the gap between old-school owners and new-school owners.

Richardson already has made several personnel moves this offseason that may indicate his concern about the labor situation.

He released numerous high-priced veterans and let All-Pro defensive end Julius Peppers walk into free agency.

The labor negotiations have been a touchy subject around the league, and the lack of the agreement will force teams to operate without a salary cap next season.

If no agreement is reached in the meantime, there is the possibility of a lockout.Several other owners talked briefly about the matter, but the sources said Richardson clearly was taking the lead on the matter.

Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress: Brett Favre can take as long as he needs

Brad Childress says if Brett Favre decides he wants to return for another season, the Minnesota Vikings coach is comfortable waiting as long as he did last summer for Favre to join the team.

"We've been able to see at what point he's been able to enter the situation and still be productive," Childress said Monday in an interview with ESPN's Rachel Nichols at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla. "Obviously with that as a known with a 40-year-old quarterback -- there wasn't a big book on that before we started, now we have at least a pamphlet -- we have an idea of where that's at."

Favre signed with the Vikings on Aug. 18 last year -- after the team had already broken its training camp in Mankato, Minn., and had already played its first preseason game.

Favre signed and then played three days later in the Vikings' second preseason game, against Kansas City.

"As a coach, you're a mother hen, you'd like him to be there for all of it," Childress said. "But I'm enough of a realist to know that's probably not going to be the case."

Childress visited Favre in Hattiesburg, Miss., early this month and said their talks did not focus on the upcoming season.

Childress said he didn't "think for a minute he's trying to hold us up. I think he's got to mull it all over and chew on it."

Ronnie Brown of Miami Dolphins charged with driving under the influence of alcohol

ATLANTA -- Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown, who had been in the suburban Atlanta area to help celebrate his parents' anniversary, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and released from jail a few hours later, officials said Monday.

The 28-year-old fifth-year pro was arrested at 4:29 a.m. Saturday, Marietta Police Officer Jennifer Murphy said. Marietta is about 15 miles northwest of Atlanta.

Brown's mother, Joyce Brown, told The Associated Press in a phone interview on Monday that Brown was visiting his hometown of Cartersville for her and her husband's 32nd anniversary. She said he had eaten dinner with relatives and then went to a club. She didn't know the name of the club, but the night was not part of the anniversary celebration.

She said her son was pulled over for failing to use a turn signal, but believes he was targeted because he was driving a high-priced car and is black.

Murphy would not provide details of the arrest and the AP has filed an open records request for the information. Officials at the Smyrna City Jail say Brown posted $1,110 bond and was released hours after his arrest. Cartersville is about 20 miles from Marietta.

Brown's mother said she believes both police and the media unfairly single out football players.

"Just because of who they are, they shouldn't be pinpointed," Brown said. "They're still people, too."

Brown's agent, Todd France, did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment.

Brown's mother said her son had an attorney but wouldn't give a name.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, asked about the report on Monday morning at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla., said the Dolphins are still gathering information on what happened. The team takes the situation seriously, Sparano said.

Team owner Stephen Ross, who is attending NFL meetings in Orlando, Fla., said the organization is unhappy about the recent spate of arrests of its players. Cornerback Will Allen was charged with driving under the influence in Miami Beach, and defensive tackle Tony McDaniel was accused of domestic violence at his home in Davie, both last month.

"It certainly doesn't make us happy, and it is a concern," Ross said without specifically talking about Brown. "I think the coaches and [Dolphins football czar] Bill Parcells are disappointed and concerned, and they are addressing it."

Brown's season ended early with an injury to his right foot. He was the Dolphins' leading rusher at the time and was the key player in their wildcat formation before being placed on injured reserve Nov. 18.

Arizona Cardinals agree to three-year deal with Joey Porter

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter agreed to a three-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Friday.

Arizona Cardinals agree to three-year deal with Joey Porter

Porter

The deal is for $17.5 million with a maximum value of $24.5 million, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Porter, entering his 12th season, spent the past three with the Miami Dolphins, who released him in March. He played the first eight years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With 92 career sacks, Porter trails only Jason Taylor (127) among active players. Porter has 12 career interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, 23 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries with two returned for TDs.

Porter will join a team with a coaching staff that includes several members of the Steelers' staff when he was with Pittsburgh. They include coach Ken Whisenhunt, who was the Steelers' offensive coordinator.

Porter had been courted recently by the Washington Redskins.

Sando: What Porter brings

Arizona Cardinals agree to three-year deal with Joey Porter

At the very least, Joey Porter gives the Cardinals a needed situational pass-rusher and some flexibility heading into the draft, writes Mike Sando. Blog

When he met with Cardinals officials at the team's headquarters on March 11, Porter said the familiarity with the coaches was a big reason he was considering Arizona. He also wanted to be relatively near his hometown of Bakersfield, Calif.

"I was looking to play for a West Coast team and I know everything Whiz is about," Porter said at the time. "He had me over there in Pittsburgh for eight years so I don't have to be blindsided by some new coaches and trying to wonder how I fit. I know exactly how I fit. I know how he would try and use me if I was here and I am just trying to be a piece to the puzzle that's already there."

Porter disputed the perception that, because of his declining stats with the Dolphins, he could no longer play at the elite level he had established in Pittsburgh.

"I've got a lot left," he said last week. "All you have to do is turn on the tape and I feel like I don't have to sell myself. What I did on the football field is going to sell that for me. With my role being reduced to the playing time I did have and missing three games, I still mustered up enough to lead the team [with nine sacks]."

Whisenhunt called the addition of Porter "exciting on many levels."

"Two areas that come to mind are his productivity on the field, getting 26.5 sacks over the last two years is pretty impressive, especially considering last year with not even playing a full season," Whisenhunt said. "Also the mentality he brings, it's something we have made great progress with as a team. Having another veteran player, who has had great success in this league, to contribute to that will only help us in an area defensively where we want to improve."

Philadelphia Eagles sign Darryl Tapp to contract

PHILADELPHIA -- Darryl Tapp is looking forward to a fresh start.

Philadelphia Eagles sign Darryl Tapp to contract

Tapp

Two days after joining the Philadelphia Eagles in a trade, Tapp signed a three-year contract on Thursday. The Eagles sent defensive end Chris Clemons and a fourth-round pick in next month's draft to Seattle for Tapp.

Tapp's contract is a two-year extension tacked on to the one year he had left on his Seattle contract, with $9 million in annual base salaries and a $3 million signing bonus, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The contract could be worth up to $15 million with escalators.

The 25-year-old Tapp will compete for a starting spot at left defensive end after playing four seasons in Seattle. A second-round draft pick by the Seahawks in 2006, Tapp has 18 sacks, two interceptions, eight forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 64 games.

"I think a change of scenery will be good," Tapp said. "I guess last year I had 2 sacks, but honestly in my eyes, I feel like it was my best year. I had 2 sacks and 18 quarterback hits. Last year was just a difficult situation with the circumstances that we had in Seattle. So, stats don't always tell the story. It's what you see on the surface."

He'll battle Victor Abiamiri and Juqua Parker for playing time opposite Pro Bowl right end Trent Cole.

In other moves, the team released defensive end Darren Howard and wide receiver Kevin Curtis.

"When I first found out I was being traded I was shocked, honestly, because everything I heard from the people in Seattle was that I was going to be there for this upcoming year," Tapp said. "I was looking forward to going in there and getting the ball rolling again.

"When I found out, it was a bittersweet moment. It was bitter because the team that finally gave me a chance to play in the league was moving elsewhere without me, but it's a sweet thing because I get to play for a great organization and be closer to home."

Tapp grew up in Virginia and went to Virginia Tech. The Eagles scouted him in college and considered selecting him in the draft before he was off the board.

Tapp was a restricted free agent and signed a one-year tender this week. His contract runs through the 2012 season.

Howard joined the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent in 2006 and played in all 64 regular-season games and six playoff games. He had 22 sacks among his 122 tackles.

"Darren Howard has been one of our most productive and versatile members of our defense in the last couple of years," coach Andy Reid said. "He is nothing but a solid player, leader and person on and off the field."

Curtis signed with Philadelphia as an unrestricted free agent in 2007 and caught 116 passes for 1,577 yards and eight touchdowns in 28 games. He was plagued by injuries the last two years after a strong 2007 in which he made 77 receptions for 1,110 yards and six touchdowns.

"Kevin is one of the classiest players I have ever been around," Reid said. "He's the type of player and person we like to build our team with. We just feel good about the young core of receivers we have on our team at this point."

DALLAS -- Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant, whose draft stock is uncertain, will visit the Dallas Cowboys' practice facilities at Valley Ranch on April 1, according to multiple sources.

Bryant will have a personal workout for NFL teams March 30 in his hometown of Lufkin, Texas, before going to Valley Ranch. His agent, Eugene Parker, said that Bryant will not work out for the Cowboys. Players cannot have private workouts without a special waiver from the NFL.

Bryant, projected to be the first wide receiver taken in the upcoming NFL draft, did not work out at the NFL scouting combine or at Oklahoma State's pro day because of a recent hamstring injury, which has given several teams pause.

Most NFL teams will try to bring in or talk to as many projected draft picks as possible. But the Cowboys, who have the No. 27 pick this year, haven't used a first-round draft pick on a wide receiver since 1991, when Dallas selected Alvin Harper with the 12th overall pick.

Wide receiver is an interesting position for the Cowboys, as starters Miles Austin and Roy E. Williams are entering different stages of their careers.

The Cowboys believe Austin, after his breakout Pro Bowl season, is on the rise. Williams' value to the team, however, is uncertain after consecutive seasons of inconsistent play. The team's younger receivers -- Sam Hurd and Kevin Ogletree -- and veteran No. 3 wideout Patrick Crayton are still valued.

Adding a top receiver in Bryant, should he fall to the bottom half of the first round, would make for an intriguing decision for the Cowboys. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones has said in the past that drafting a wide receiver in the first round is difficult, given how long it takes for players at that position to develop and the amount of money a team has to give out.

The Cowboys drafted Oklahoma wide receiver Manuel Johnson last year in the seventh round. He spent the season on the practice squad.

Seattle Seahawks acquire San Diego Chargers' Charlie Whitehurst

The Seattle Seahawks and San Diego Chargers have completed a trade that sends third-string Chargers quarterback Charlie Whitehurst to Seattle for draft picks.

The Seahawks swapped the 40th pick in the second round with San Diego's 60th pick and also will send the Chargers a third-round pick in the 2011 draft.

Seattle, meanwhile, has signed Whitehurst to a two-year, $8 million contract, with $2 million more in incentives.

The Chargers now have three third-round picks in 2011. They earlier acquired the New York Jets' third-round pick next year in exchange for cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

Whitehurst, a restricted free agent with third-round compensation, has had only four NFL snaps and has not thrown a pass in a regular-season game. The Clemson product signed his one-year restricted tender Wednesday, which facilitated the trade, after deciding he preferred to play in Seattle instead of Arizona.

Matt Hasselbeck, 34, remains Seattle's starting quarterback, but the 27-year-old Whitehurst could be viewed as the quarterback for the future.

The Cardinals agreed to a contract Wednesday with former Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson.

The Lions have the second pick in the draft.

Some talent evaluators believe the 23-year-old Suh, who played at Nebraska, is the NFL's best defensive tackle prospect to enter the draft in several years.

During his career at Nebraska, Suh appeared in 54 games and totaled 214 tackles, 56 tackles for loss, 24 sacks, four interceptions, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, 15 pass deflections and six blocked kicks. A single-season, career-best 12 sacks came in 2009.

The 6-feet-4, 302-pound Suh won the Outland Trophy, the Lombardi Award, the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Award in his final college season. He was also named as the Associated Press player of the year and was a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Derek Anderson agrees to 2-year deal with Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals and former Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson have agreed to a two-year contract worth $7.25 million, a source told ESPN.com Wednesday.

The source said the deal includes $3.25 million guaranteed, and with incentives would max out at $18.25 million.

Anderson would compete with current Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart for the starting job.

Charlie Whitehurst had better become more than a backup after the Seahawks paid handsomely for the Chargers' third-string quarterback Wednesday. Blog

Leinart had been the only quarterback on Arizona's roster following the retirement of Kurt Warner.

"We have seen a tremendous amount of growth from Matt. He has worked hard," coach Ken Whisenhunt said Wednesday, "but I am also excited about Derek and there will be competition at that position. That's not anything different than what we have at other positions."

Anderson was released by Cleveland on March 9, ending an uneven five-year stint with the team. He made the Pro Bowl in 2007 when he threw 29 touchdown passes and led the club to a 10-6 record.

"I think a fresh start was something that I wanted," Anderson said in a conference call, "getting out of Cleveland and getting out there and compete and kind of prove that I can play. 2007 was a great year, but the last couple of years haven't been, obviously, good for me or the team I was playing on. So I am just excited about a new opportunity with a new team."

Anderson visited the Cardinals last Friday. He also made a stop in Seattle. Anderson knows Leinart is ahead of him on the depth chart.

"It was understood to me that I was going to be the No. 2 and come in and compete and do what I've done over my career," he said. "I am coming into camp and everything like that and I've gone into every training camp I have been involved in thinking I am going to play and get better. Obviously, my job will be to push Matt and make him better, too."

Whisenhunt said he got a text from Leinart on Wednesday saying he "knew there was going to be competition, but he was going to show he was ready to play. "

"So that indicated to me that Matt was in a good place," the coach said. ".... I don't know necessarily that it was a function of any announcements about us reaching an agreement with Derek as much as it was just Matt staying in communication. That is what we want from our players and I was excited to see that."

Philadelphia Eagles release Shawn Andrews

PHILADELPHIA -- Shawn Andrews' star-crossed career in Philadelphia is over.

Philadelphia Eagles release Shawn Andrews

ESPN.com's Matt Mosley writes about all things NFC East in his division blog.

The Eagles released the former All-Pro right guard on Wednesday in a move that was expected. Andrews, who missed the 2008 training camp because of depression, has played in just two games the past two years because of back injuries.

"We appreciate the efforts and contributions of Shawn while he was in Philadelphia," coach Andy Reid said in a statement. "We have, however, decided to move in another direction."

Andrews wrote "Bye, Bye Birds" on his Twitter page. He also said he plans to continue playing.

Andrews' passion for football had been questioned during his time in Philadelphia. Critics said he was more interested in his music career. The eccentric Andrews posted some videos on YouTube last summer while he was sitting out practices.

Selected with the 16th overall selection in the 2004 NFL draft, Andrews missed his rookie season after breaking a leg in the opener. He overcame weight issues and rebounded from his injury to emerge into one of the top players at his position. Andrews made the Pro Bowl in 2006 and '07 and had a contract that ran through 2015.

Last offseason, the Eagles signed Andrews' older brother, Stacy Andrews, to a lucrative contract even though he was coming off knee surgery.

Shawn Andrews was moved to right tackle to replace longtime starter Jon Runyan and Stacy Andrews was supposed to play right guard. However, the brothers never played a down together with the Eagles.

Despite his talent, Shawn Andrews was known more for his offbeat personality. He sported faux-hawk haircuts that sometimes were dyed blond or red, and often wandered through the locker room singing out loud.

Runyan retired from the NFL earlier this year to run for a House seat as a Republican in a historically Republican district in New Jersey. His campaign formally begins Thursday.

Ben Roethlisberger has not met with Georgia Bureau of Investigations

ATLANTA -- An attorney for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says the two-time Super Bowl winner has yet to meet with Georgia authorities who are investigating a sexual assault allegation made against him by a 20-year-old college student.

Ed Garland told The Associated Press on Tuesday that his client is not in Georgia and has yet to speak with investigators regarding the accusation made on March 5 in Milledgeville. He has not been charged.

Garland says there is no timetable for the interview.

NFL.com reported on Tuesday that Roethlisberger and others who were with him the night of the alleged incident were interviewed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Saturday in Georgia.

When asked if the NFL.com report was true, Georgia Bureau of Investigation special agent Tom Davis told ESPN's Kelly Naqi on Tuesday in an e-mail, "Not entirely."

"[The Georgia Bureau of Investigation] has not interviewed Ben Roethlisberger yet," special agent Tom Davis told Naqi on Tuesday. "We interviewed a majority of people that were in his group on Saturday in Georgia. I will not say who from his group we interviewed but we have not spoken to Ben yet. His lawyer has not made him available. [Garland] has cooperated in every way, with the exception of the interview."

Davis said Garland has cooperated with the investigation and has made the Steelers quarterback "available for everything we have asked with the exception of interviewing him at this point."

When asked if Garland had told authorities whether Roethlisberger would be made available in the future, Davis told Naqi, "[Garland] has not decided for sure one way or the other."

Davis added, "According to the Bill of Rights, [Roethlisberger] doesn't have to speak with police if he doesn't want to but [Garland] has been very cooperative in every other way."

Davis declined to say whether Garland was considering having Roethlisberger submit a sample of his DNA for testing.

Milledgeville Police Chief Woodrow Blue also confirmed to ESPN in an e-mail Tuesday that investigators spoke on Saturday to members of Roethlisberger's party from the night of the alleged assault, but have not yet interviewed Roethlisberger.

"We haven't set any timetable for ourselves [on when they'll complete their investigation]," Blue told Naqi. He reiterated that Garland has been cooperative.

The student told police that the 28-year-old quarterback, who had been barhopping with friends, assaulted her at a nightclub in the college town.

Garland has said the quarterback committed no crime.

Roethlisberger's agent, Ryan Tollner, declined comment when reached by ESPN on Tuesday.

Roethlisberger missed the start of the Steelers' offseason workout program Monday.

"Nate was a great teammate," said Zack Bowman, who replaced Vasher at cornerback. "It was amazing how he kept things so positive even though things really weren't going the way he wanted them to on the field.

"The guy never took a negative approach to anything. He constantly gave me pointers, gave me encouragement and passed on a lot of things that as a young guy I really benefited from. Not only did Vash play some good ball here in Chicago, he was an extremely popular guy in the locker room.

Whether you needed a ride somewhere or wanted to watch a basketball game with somebody, Vash was always eager to hang out."

Vasher, who earned a Pro Bowl selection after recording eight interceptions in 2005, set an NFL record by returning a missed field goal 108 yards for a touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers on Nov. 13, 2005.

That record was broken when San Diego cornerback Antonio Cromartie returned a missed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown in 2007.

A fourth-round pick in 2004, Vasher started 46 games in six seasons with the Bears.

The Bears signed veteran cornerback Tim Jennings to a two-year contract on Tuesday.

Baker will sign a two-year, $4.75 million deal that includes $2.75 million in the first year with the Seahawks, according to a league source.

Seattle was anxious to upgrade its tight ends. Now that it has, New England doesn't have a proven one on its roster.
