Redskins DE Phillip Daniels expresses disappointment after suffering season ending knee injury.
Thirteen-year veteran Phillip Daniels has reached agreement with the Redskins on a one-year contract worth $845,000. Daniels told The Washington Times last week that he intended to re-sign.The Redskins released Daniels earlier this spring for salary cap purposes, and he generated pretty good interest in the free agent market before deciding to re-sign with the team. The other franchises interested in Daniels wanted to wait until after the April 25-26 draft to sign him.
Daniels' contract agreement was confirmed by agent Hadley Engelhard. Daniels was scheduled to make $2.15 million in 2008 under his old contract.
The Redskins recently re-signed defensive lineman Renaldo Wynn to a one-year contract. Wynn and Daniels are the most experienced left ends on the roster. Although neither might start, both should add depth to the unit.
Daniels, 36, has been with the Redskins since 2004. Previously, the former University of Georgia standout played with Seattle (1996-1999) and Chicago (2000-2003). He has appeared in 159 games with 141 starts, and started 15 games for Washington in 2007. He had 37 tackles and 2 sacks that season but missed the 2008 season with a knee injury.
For his career, Daniels has 456 tackles, 59 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, 12 fumble recoveries, one interception, and 36 passes defensed.
